The knowledge of blood group is one thing that everyone should have

Today marks it four years, I miscarried my first baby. I can vividly remember when I was six weeks pregnant, I went with my ex fiancé for my ultrasound, with so much excitement that I will get to know the sex of my baby (mind you this is the week to know the sex of a child). As a first time mom to be, I wanted to surprise my ex(hahahaha having to create content, 😜 me ); I pleaded with him to wait for me at the lobby, which he accepted.

Lying down on that bed waiting to hear “ oh!! Chidinma can you see” but, instead what I heard from the doctor killed me: “ Chidinma, I can only see your sac without an embryo” says the doctor. I can remember saying “doc!! esi gini?(doc!! what did you say)”. Then he cleaned my abdomen and told me to invite my husband.

We were before the doctor, we were advised that I needed to carry out a D&C ( dilation and curettage) because, I have a condition called anembryonic gestation which made me to miscarry my pregnancy; also, due to my collapsed sac I be needing an urgent D&C to be done as fast as possible. Hearing that I started crying, I cried from the hospital to the house.

My ex fiancé was not taking in the diagnosis. We immediately went to another hospital, the doctor said same thing; with that confirmation I was booked for the D&C the next day so that the lining of my uterus would be cleaned and vacuum the sac.

What shocked me was that, the second hospital did not care to run a blood test on me to know my blood history, all he wrote while he was booking me was “booked for D&C”. Immediately, I informed him that I was o-, what he said “wow!! expensive blood group ”  that was when he informed my ex to buy RhoGram (RhoGAM is the injection used to treat Rh incompatibility during and after pregnancy).

The reason for this thread is to remind my queens, that some medical professionals are the reason why some ladies cannot conceive in the future after some procedures carried out on them. Take for instance mine case, if I did not have the knowledge of my blood group, I would have been a victim. The doctor would have carried out the procedure on me without injecting me with the RhoGram, this medical negligence would have caused me my joy.

Please know your blood group and study about it very well.

  1. This is a great read. I am sorry you went through that. I am glad you are in a better place now.

Most times people tend to neglect their rhesus factor and focus only on their blood group. Rhesus incompatibility should be common knowledge.

    Thank you for sharing.
